What D.C. mayor and council hopefuls think about curfews, robo-taxis, Trump and more
With a wide-open mayor’s race and seven D.C. Council seats on the ballot this election cycle, D.C.’s government is slated to experience a significant shakeup. And in a city as deep-blue as this one, the Democratic primary is the most consequential contest of the election year.
Ballots have been mailed to voters, and drop boxes are open to receive them. Early voting starts June 8, and primary day is June 16.
We asked the Democratic candidates for mayor and council, along with the candidates in the special election for independent at-large council member, for their views on a range of city issues — including curfews, tax policy, robo-taxis, income inequality, rent control and the books that influenced them most.
Scroll through below to see how they answered.
Who are the candidates?

Do you support special 8 p.m. youth curfew zones to address the phenomenon of “teen takeovers”?

Do you support congestion pricing?

Would you change D.C. tax policy? Would you increase or add taxes in any way? Would you decrease taxes in any way? If so, how?

What do you think is the most pressing issue in D.C. public schools, and what is one specific proposal you have to address it?

Do you support expanding rent stabilization, which caps rent increases in rental units built before 1975, to apply to more buildings in D.C.?

Do you believe the city is ready to bring autonomous vehicles, known as “robotaxis,” to D.C. streets within the next year?

What is your most ambitious idea for reducing economic inequality in D.C., and how would you accomplish it?

Do you think D.C. has too many police, not enough police or the right amount of police?

If elected, how would you approach the city’s relationship with President Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress?

D.C. lost more than 22,000 jobs last year because of mass federal job cuts. What is your most ambitious proposal to revive D.C.’s economy?

What book has most influenced you?
